Procrastination Cure? Burn a Bridge

Sometimes you have to leave no way out. It’s like shaving half your face (or legs) at midnight—is there any chance you won’t be up at the crack of dawn to finish the job? Whether you want to or not, you’re getting up. You left no choice. You burned a bridge.

When you click send, sign on the line, say yes, you burn a bridge. You make a commitment, to yourself or others, that can’t easily be ignored.

Years ago, incomparable author and speaker Zig Ziglar burned a bridge.

Wanting to lose weight, but never actually losing any of it, he published See You at the Top with a lie. He wrote that he weighed 165 pounds. Zig weighed 202.

When you click send, sign on the line, say yes, you burn a bridge. You make a commitment, to yourself or others, that can’t easily be ignored.

At least 25,000 people would read the lie and expect the truth. So Zig did the only thing he could. He lost the weight and kept his promise. Bridge burning gave him the added pressure to stop procrastinating.
