Rick Springfield, a Ring, and a Tip
Joe and Jessie tried to quit smoking many times. Each time they failed. Things
would go well for the first few days or even weeks, but they'd inevitably end
up back at square one, lit cigarette in their hands. That was before they were
married.
At a crowded concert, and with the band playing a hushed rendition of Rick
Springfield's "Jesse's Girl," Joe nervously climbed onto the stage. Walking to
the center microphone, he asked his then girlfriend to join him. She tried to
hide, but soon found herself center-stage. Joe dropped to his knee. Jessie
cried. They were married later that year.
(If you're confused about Springfield's song as a backdrop, I'm right there
with you. His Jesse was a boy, after all.)
They both smoked for several years into their marriage. Then one day the
random thought of quitting fell into Jessie's head. Maybe this time it will
work, she thought. And though it took convincing, Joe agreed to join the
crusade.
And guess what--it worked. What slipped through their fingers so many times as
individuals finally came together when they worked as a team. Their lives are
healthier and will last longer because they had each other. It's a lesson to
copy.
Improving your life isn't easy. Breaking habits is even harder. But when you
do it with a partner, every obstacle is shrunken and ever setback is softened.
When Joe got the urge, he had someone to turn to. And because she knew exactly
what he was going through, she was able to offer the best kind of support.
This relationship went both ways.
Joe and Jessie kept each other strong and quit smoking as a team. Which of
your goals could use the magic of teamwork?
