Musical Dreams
After years away from music, Alex, an old friend, wanted to start a second
band. The first group, The Michael Brooks Project, played together for
several years in college, but it broke up soon after graduation. He missed
the feeling of playing live.
It was a challenging goal. Getting people together for lunch can be hard, let
alone trying to find three or four talented musicians looking to join a new
band and commit weeks and months to practice and play.
But he was confident because he had done it before. Alex knew firsthand how
hard it was going to be. He also knew just as intimately that he had made it
through before. He did it once; he could do it again.
That's a key we can all use.
The reason to be confident about what you want now is that you've done so
much before. Have millions of people raised children? Of course they have.
But that doesn't make it any easier to do. If you're a parent, you've handled
some of the most difficult and confusing and terrifying moments anyone has
faced. And you made out alive. That's a reason to be confident.
Have you learned how to drive--while finding your favorite radio station,
reaching into the glove box for a napkin, dialing your phone, eating a yogurt
parfait (with strawberries) and steering with your knee? That's a complicated
and risky task, not to mention illegal, but you've done something close to
it. Common? Yes, but still complex.
These are just two examples of how your past can serve your future. I talk
with people that wonder if they have what it takes to achieve some goal.
After learning about their pasts, it's clear to me that they can do it. They
have already proven their abilities many times over.
But they don't see it. They don't realize just how much they've already
accomplished. And I'm guessing you don't either.
Take a few minutes today to think back on your old successes. It doesn't
matter how small they are; every piece of evidence counts. Then, when you run
into a tough spot, remember what you've done. Remember that you've made it
through hard times before, and tell yourself you can do it again.
